We would like to congratulate all of the students who took part in our Club Grading at Thornleigh Salesian High School in Bolton last Sunday. It was a very humid day with a lot of students eager to impress the Instructors and earn their first or next belts.
It was a fairly young group of students and a lot were coming to grading for the first ever time. After a very nervous start, the students soon settled in and began to relax and show us what they have been learning. They were all fantastic!
It was great to meet the very first batch of students from Dean Knox Sensei’s new Irlam dojo, they all did brilliantly and Dean Sensei is clearly doing a fantastic job. Well done to you all.
Thirteen students were returning for the 2nd time attempting their Red Belts and they were all super, especially Claire Harrison, Jack and Summer Bevan and Daniel Ingham. The whole group worked really hard and all were successful – well done.
Ava Wells, Hamza Nafees and Jamie Ingham all did brilliantly to earn their 7th Kyu yellow belts. The group attempting green belt were among the best we have seen in a long time. They all knew their katas, combinations and kumite drills and we were very impressed. Congratulations to Sarah, Poppy and Luke Evans, Darcey Mason, Josephine Hardman and Millie Dodd. Very good performances indeed.
The three students attempting their purple belts were also very good. Martin Smith and David Smith who both train at Swinton and Winton classes were excellent. David was particularly impressive and couldn’t have tried any harder. He was awarded the student of the grading trophy for his outstanding performance. Well done.
We were also very happy with the Davies sisters from Bromley Cross. Both Katie and Lucy are superb and have a very bright future ahead of them if they continue to work hard. They reminded me of a younger version of the Cain sisters which if you know them, you’ll know this is a great thing. All feisty young ladies definitely not to be messed with!
The group attempting purple and white belt were given a very hard time by Paul Sensei. This was a young group who were exceptionally nervous. We would hope that a few of them might begin to up their training as once you reach the level of 4th Kyu, you do need to start training twice a week in order to improve and learn everything that is required to make it to brown belt and beyond.
Congratulations to those who were successful – Maryam and Youseff Khattak, Luke Hindley, Lewis Horsfield, the very impressive duo Lucy Davies and Ren Smith.
A couple of students completed the grading and really did try their very best, however there is a few things they need to improve before they can be awarded their full grade. So big well done to Alfie Dodd and Sophie Smith who worked hard but didn’t quite make it this time. Both are absolutely lovely kids who have all the potential to earn their belts next time around.
Lastly, we must say a huge thanks to the parents and supporters who gave up their afternoon to support this event and also the Instructors who all do a fab job in preparing their students and supporting us on the day. Without everyone’s effrort we would have no club. Thanks also to Sam Hindley, Grace Baron and Anthony Greenough who all gave their time to help and demonstrate on the day. Your hard work is greatly appreciated.
